Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) in October introduced the Historic Roadways Protection Act in the United States Senate in response to the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) recent decision to close 317 miles of popular historic roads in Moab. Senator Lee’s bill prohibits using federal money to enact new travel plans in Utah until all the historic road cases that are currently being adjudicated have been settled. Additionally, Sen. Lee’s legislation pauses any previous plans by the BLM to change how these lands are used until the courts reach a decision on these historic roads.BlueRibbon Coalition (BRC) supports this legislation, and is encouraged to see Congress push back on the BLM’s radical decision to close these roads. “The roads that the BLM closed in Moab are an important historic and cultural resource for the people of Utah and the members of BlueRibbon Coalition,” BlueRibbon Coalition Executive Director, Ben Burr said. “As Congress convenes to pass new spending bills in the coming weeks, we hope that this legislation will be included as an important priority for the public interest of Americans in the West who are fed up with the current Administration’s radical land grabs.”The BLM plan to close 317 miles of historic roads in Moab was the result of a planning process required by a 2017 legal settlement. The 2017 Settlement Agreement between the Department of Interior, SUWA, the Effort Launched to Save Moab TrailsCanyonlands National Park Grand View Point Photo Credit: NPS Neal HerbertWilderness Society, BlueRibbon Coalition, Colorado TPA, and Ride with Respect, says, “The obligations imposed upon Federal Defendants under this Settlement Agreement can only be undertaken using appropriated funds.” BlueRibbon Coalition urges its members and supporters to contact their members of Congress to support the Historic Roadways Protection Act and save our Moab trails by enacting funding restrictions on public land closures.

6 IN GEAR October/ November 2023PRESIDENT’S REportHello all! I hope this President article finds you all in great health and you are having a great time enjoying all these public lands at our disposal that we are fighting for! This fall weather is nice and I’m looking forward to some winter type weather as we move forward through the seasons. Those of you that have to deal with snow might think very differently than I.There has been a tremendous amount of stuff happening since my last report and going to try and condense it down here as much as possible. Since Suzy announced her retirement, we had to look into the Association deeper than we have in a long time. We had to make changes and move responsibilities around from the webmaster to the office staff and from the office staff to the new webmaster and so on. As we started to peel this proverbial onion, we realized that there is much more that needs attention Association wide and that has been more involved than anyone had imagined but changes are being made to make our association run smoother and more efficiently to take responsibilities once handled by the office staff and make them automated because at the root of all this, the goal is to simplify how we do JOSH EPSTEINPRESIDENTJosh@cal4wheel.combusiness, make the lives of our employees and contractors better and have more time for the fun stuff, like land advocacy.During all of this, I have had a rock star team and I don’t say that lightly. Robert Reed, David Douglas, Don Spuhlar, and Debbie Stephens have been working their butts off in the background to bring this to fruition. A lot of this wouldn’t have been possible if it weren’t for the help from our contracted Quickbooks consultant, Gary Clark. Gary has been going above and beyond to find areas where we can do better overall and help organize and clean up loose ends from over the years since no one really knew how loose they really were. Everyone has been putting 100 percent into this and I’m proud of each and every one of them – thank you!For the past few months, the focus has been the financial side of the Association with Robert Reed, David Douglas, and Debbie Stephens which morphed from our original ‘fix it’ committee, which was to take a look at the entire process of how the Association conducts business and work towards simplifying all aspects of the Association as well as making the day to day business more efficient. This has led to the hiring of a new accounting firm and bookkeeper. I am saddened to tell you that we will no longer be working with Chris Aasnes, and wanted to thank him for his service to the Association for the past 20-plus years. Chris and I talked at length and both agreed that this is the best decision for the Association moving forward. This process took effect October 1, and we are working with our new accountant and bookkeeper. The goal is to get the financial responsibility away from the State Treasurer to make that position more of a reporting position while relieving an extreme amount of pressure off the office staff. I also want to mention the hard work and dedication both Bonnie and Barbara have had over the past few months and their incredible patience as this transition has not been easy.We have been working on streamlining the IMIS (Website) to correlate with Quick Books more efficiently to take the previously hands on approach away and make for a better, more efficient way for the Association to conduct business. The ultimate goal is to take a plethora of work off the office staff so they can do what they do best.

Page 7

cal4wheel.com/in-gear 7Costs are going to be higher than usual due to the changes and expect them to be only higher for a short time as we get past the learning phase with everyone and onto a more productive/efficient path. Thank you to everyone for their patience in this transition as it has been a lot of work and there is quite a bit of work ahead of us. To say this doesn’t seem overwhelming at times is an understatement but we are working for a better tomorrow and I’m proud of what we have accomplished thus far and excited for what’s still to come. With all these changes I’m sure you noticed that the IN Gear had some, well, slight concerns in the first edition from our new Editors, Nick and Jonathon. There is going to be a learning curve with everyone and rest assured, the BOD and the Editors will be working together to avoid situations like this in the future. To be honest, after talking to Jonathon and Nick about their plans and ideas for the future with the publication, I’m excited to see that come to light. The new webmasters are getting things figured out as their first event was Sierra Trek and what an event to have as your first, right? The BOD and Inidel have been ironing out small issues and getting Inidel up to speed and its going relatively smooth and I’m excited to get past this learning curve. Its hard when you get used to having someone that knew each crack and crevice of the Association with over 30 years of experience to someone that has limited knowledge but I’m confident we’re past the hard part and things will start rolling smoother. Speaking of Sierra Trek, I need to thank John and Rene Allen for their unbelievable work over the past two years! You two are awesome and deserve the world for the amount of work you put in. I will say you had an incredible team of volunteers behind you and you put on one hell of an event! I don’t have exact numbers as I write this but its made more money than last years record setting year! Congratulations everyone for putting on an awesome event and providing a great time for everyone and like everyone, I can’t wait for next year!High Sierra Poker Run was equally awesome in its own way and thank you to everyone that put that event on and the event chair Paul Brady and Co-Chair Steve Peckham! Even though you could have ordered better weather, everyone had a great time overall and that not so great weather was perfect in keeping the dust down. Even my 12 year old daughter, who I may have misled the use of a motorhome and dragged along to sleep in a tent with rain and hail had a great time, or, says she did. Memories like these is why we do it and I wouldn’t change a thing.I was very saddened to hear the news of Panamint Valley Days having to be cancelled – Both Bonnie Fergueson and Jeff Godde love that event and I’m sure it was an unbelievable decision to make as Hurricane Hillary ravaged that area and the possibility of permits seemed impossible and the only logical thing to do was to cancel the event. As of my writing on this article, the High Desert 4-wheelers have issued a challenge to the entire Association to match or beat their $500 donation in lieu of PVD being cancelled - If you can’t match or beat, every little bit helps and if you can, donate.Operation Desert Fun will have happened before you read this and as I’m writing this, I’m gearing up for the event which is near and dear to my heart and can’t wait to get out for the weekend and get some lies told around a campfire since it has been a long hot summer here in the south and for all its faults, you can’t beat the winter evenings which are finally heading our way. Angela Cook, the founder and chair for the past 20 years of ODF decided it was time to spoil herself with some well deserved personal time and decided to step away from ODF after last years event - Angela, thank you so very much for all that you have done over the years for this Association and for ODF. In closing this time, thank you very much to everyone for all of your patience as we organize, clean and prepare this Association for the next 65 years! Speaking of which, I need to get back to emails, packing for ODF and so on, so.. ….Till the next campfire

VICE PRESIDENT REPORT8 IN GEAR October/ November 2023Here we are in October already. The weather is starting to cool down. I can’t believe summer is over already. It’s time to start making plans for the holidays and winter wheeling at events like Winter Fun Fest. By the time you read this, Winter Fun Fest registration will be open. Definitely look into this event. What a great way to spend some time in the snow with family and friends. Held up in Grass Valley, Calif. Cal4wheel has finished wrapping up its summer events, and what a success they have been! Thanks for coming out and camping and wheeling with us this season. The Sierra Trek raffle turned out to be a huge success as was the whole event. The weather was as good as anyone could ask for, and the attendance was awesome. As I wandered through the main camp, I saw lots of happy folks enjoying the event all weekend. I was able to get my wife and kids up to Trek for their first times too. But what some people don’t fully appreciate is all the behind the scenes help it takes to put on an event like this. All our events really. It takes a small army to volunteer and give up their time to make sure these events come off as smoothly as possible so that the attendees can participate on their chosen run, enjoy breakfast with their friends in the morning, dinner at night, and hang out around the fire and enjoy a cocktail when the day’s done. The volunteers are the unsung heroes of all of Cal4wheel’s events. Months of preparatory meetings, tie off ahead of the event to set up, and time to break down. Clubs that have banded together for years to give you a place to shower after the trail, sell you snacks while you enjoy your afternoon in camp, or take your money while you buy up those raffle tickets to win some cool prizes provided from our sponsors for these events. Please consider volunteering. Bring some friends. It’s a great time making new friends and being part of the comradery. Thank you, John and Rene, for your hard work organizing Trek, updating equipment and the well, and giving us another great summer to remember as time goes on. Beyond events, we have booths set up at other shows and events where we try and recruit membership, educate the public, and sell raffle vehicle tickets. All of this is soimportant, and we are always looking for more help. Come help out, even if it’s only for a couple hours. Also, I’d like to thank everyone for their patience while we continue the transition of contractors for the In-Gear and website. Everyone is learning and adjusting working together to get things sorted out. The BOD is always listening to your input and trying to make your association better.CHRIS SILVEIRANORTH DISTRICT VICE PRESIDENTndvp@cal4wheel.comGood morning, As I began writing this, I am in need of volunteers for the Sand Sport Super Show in Orange County but of course as you read this it’s over. In fact, same is true for the Offroad Expo. OK, after the shows I did update and add some stuff.Sand Sport Super Show, SSSS or S4, was bigger than last year, at least more vendors. I believe I heard the attendance was about 35,000 people; I’m not sure how that compares to other years. Unfortunately, we were stuck in a back corner of the hanger and didn’t get a lot of traffic and only sold 66 tickets. Usually, we sell close to 150. We didn’t have the Raffle Vehicle at the show which does draw more people but not enough, in my mind, to justify the extra $2,000 to have a larger booth to hold the vehicle.ORE, Offroad Expo, was smaller than it’s been. It also rained on Saturday, which may have kept some people away. Again, we saved the $2,000 and did not have the Raffle Vehicle there. We sold 135 tickets, which is fewer than the last few years but still understandable without the vehicle and with a smaller crowd and the economy. I was able to thank some of our sponsors and talk to a few people about Cal4Wheel. We also got six new memberships and one renewal. We still have Operation Desert Fun, ODF, starting shortly but again it’s now over. Stay tuned for reports Continued on page 9 DON ‘RYBIE’ RYBARCZYKSOUTH DISTRICT VICE PRESIDENTsdvp@cal4wheel.com

VICE PRESIDENT REPORTcal4wheel.com/in-gear 9Continued from page 8 on how it went. Keep in mind ODF is a benefit for veterans, the raffle money goes to the veterans.Regarding Panamint Valley Days, after all the rain from the storm Hillary, many roads and trails are closed in Death Valley and Panamint Valley. Bottom line is we had to cancel PVD. This is a big hit to Cal4Wheel bottom line that helps support our struggles to keep our trails open. Any donations that you can send to Cal4Wheel would help to make up this shortage.Joshua trees are being protected by the state by passage of a law, Assembly Bill 122 and Senate Bill 122. It requires the state’s Fish and Wildlife department to create a conservation plan to protect the trees. If you recall, the federal government decided the trees were not in danger and the state had some temporary protections in place. Now it has become law and will restrict development and other restrictions in the areas with Joshua trees. Maybe it’s simply a part of their 30x30 plan.San Bernardino Forest, SBNF, plans to decommission Forest Road 2N84-Little Bear Peak. As far as we are aware, there was no reason given, no public notice or comment period, and this was an adopted and maintained road. What is next!Have you heard and read about 30x30? Or maybe the next program 50x50! We need more members to help pay for these fights. Talk to your friends and get them involved and to join Cal4Wheel. We also need more active members to help with the fight. Members can join Rose on her monthly zoom meetings and see what can be done and where to help. We also need members to write letters; again see Rose’s posts to find where we need letters sent. She will give you the address or link on where to send them, to who’s attention, and what should be DAVID ROCHA IICENTRAL DISTRICT VICE PRESIDENTcdvp@cal4wheel.comI have been working with the Central District BOD to help all Central District Clubs and events possible since the last article. On Sept 21st I transported the Win-A-Jeep to a Meet-n-Greet hosted by the Ready-2-Rock club at VIP Pizza in Tulare, the pizza is amazing! At the meet-n-greet I sold Win-A-Jeep tickets and signed up as a new Cal4wheel Central District Associate Member, Disciple Off Road in Hanford Ca. Welcome to the Cal4wheel Family! At the meet-n-greet there were different clubs from the central district, and we talked about some of the things that we needed to work on together to help the off-road community and Cal4wheel family. We also heard from Valley 4xs 4 Children to talk about the toy drive that will take place on Dec 02, 2023, to supply toys and hospital supplies to Community Medical Center and Valley Childrens Hospitals. On July 15th the Central District had our July Central District Meeting located at Cool Hand Lukes in Santa Maria. We would like to put out a HUGE THANK YOU to Santa Maria 4 Wheelers for Hosting the meeting, we appreciate all the help and pride that you have for the Cal4wheel family. The Central District has come together yet again to pull off another amazing event, The 35th Annual High Sierra poker Run was Sept 1-4, 2023. We must thank the Chairman Paul Brady and the Co-chair Steve Peckham from Kingsburg 4wd Club for putting all this together and herding all of the Central District in the right direction to make it all work! THANKS AGAIN GUYS!!! The Central District Clubs that came together at the event to pull this off were High Sierra 4wd Club for leading the Brewer Lake Run and they fed the entire run a BBQ lunch all donated by High Sierra 4wd Club. Santa Maria 4 Wheelers pulled off tech and locker check for all the participants. The Bakersfield Trailblazers 4x4 Club led the Bald Mountain easy run and had tons of great pictures. The CenCal Crawlers led the great Coyote Lake Run. The Ready-2-Rock 4x4 Club led the Mirror Lake Run on Saturday and then led the Swamp Lake Run on Sunday. The Kingsburg 4wd Club led the Bald Mountain Extreme Run on Saturday and drag committee on Sunday Swamp Lake Run. Paul Brady from Kingsburg 4wd club did an amazing job for the Registration for the entire event and Nancy Rocha did the raffle ticket sales for the raffles. Then we all had an amazing Smoked Pulled Pork dinner fed to all the participants by the Dan Wheeler Family from Kingsburg 4wd Club. The camp was set up and torn down and cleaned up by members Continued on page 10 covered.Remember once we lose something, there is much less hope of getting it back. We need to act before it’s lost. Many trails are closed forever. I am sure most of you know of several places that have been closed. Yes, lots of reasons for closure but closed is closed. Too late is TOO LATE!Think about what you can do and help us fight for the trails.

10 IN GEAR October/ November 2023California State Parks is excited to announce its partnership with innovative location technology, what3words. A new tool in the State Parks toolkit, the what3words app provides dispatchers with technology to assist visitors in the event they become lost, stranded or otherwise need help from emergency services. Using this revolutionary technology, State Parks dispatchers will now be able to pinpoint the precise locations of individuals who become lost with just three dictionary words, so that help can be sent to where it is needed.what3words provides users with a simple way to communicate precise locations. It has divided the world into a grid of 10 ft x 10 ft squares and given each square a unique combination of three words: a what3words address. This means that every park bench, parking space, pitch on a campsite, and remote spot on a hiking trail has its own what3words address. “what3words enables callers and dispatchers to communicate precise locations with just three words and quickly get the help they need.”“From Garrapata on the Big Sur coast to Bodie State Historic Park near the Sierra Nevada, California’s state parks offer some of the most stunning and varied landscapes on the planet, attracting explorers from across the globe,’ said what3words CMO Giles Rhys Jones. “With every 10-foot square having its own what3words address, it is simpler than ever to arrange meeting spots with your friends, save precise locations of epic viewpoints, remember the space you parked in, and in the event of an emergency - describe exactly where to send help.”what3words already covers the entire globe, so you can easily discover addresses for all 280 California state parks in its system, including all parks and campgrounds on the internal and public GIS. In State App Incorporates what3wordsaddition, the official CA State Parks app, OuterSpatial, now displays what3words addresses for over 8,000 points of interest in the State Park System, including campsites, trailheads, and picnic areas. what3words can also be used for non-emergencies, like giving friends and family directions to a specific campsite or sharing beautiful viewpoints. Being able to precisely communicate where to find key locations can make navigating through the vast parks simple and stress free, allowing visitors to make the best use of their time and enjoy the experience to the fullest. US public safety teams urge use of what3words appContinued from page 9 Central V.P. Report from the Kingsburg 4wd Club. The General Raffle and Kids Raffle was set up and announced by Kingsburg 4wd Club. Thank you to all the clubs from up and down the state especially the Central District Clubs that came together to donate raffle prizes and the West Coast Crawlers for putting together Facebook videos and posts to make it easier for members and clubs to donate raffle prizes to the general raffle and the kid’s raffle. There were several people that we talked to that talked about how much they enjoyed themselves for the entire weekend. That being said if you enjoy going to these events or working in the off-road community, we could sure use some support to help the Central District with their events. If everyone was to help a little bit, then everyone could enjoy themselves a little bit more and the events could grow if we wanted. Since the last article I have been trying to help with the Win-A-Jeep hauling as much as possible. I went to the builder to pick up the Win-A-Jeep for transportation to Sierra Trek and gave it to Jamie Reynolds on the I-5 So Jamie could take it to Sierra Trek. Then Jamie met me on Hwy 99 and gave the Win-A-Jeep back to me so I could take it to High Sierra on one of my trips up to the event. At High Sierra we sold Win-A-Jeep tickets and promoted the Win-A-Jeep. Then I took it home on one of the trips back. I then took the Win-A-Jeep to a club meet-n-greet that Ready-2-Rock hosted in Tulare where we promoted the Win-A-Jeep and sold tickets. Then I finally took the Win-A-Jeep back to the builder, so Fred could do some more of his magic on it and get it ready for SEMA. If there is anything that I can do for you or your club please contact me. Thank you, David Rocha II

NATURAL RESOURCES CONSULTANT REPORTROSE WINNNATURAL RESOURCES CONSULTANTrwinn@cal4nrc.com12 IN GEAR October/ November 2023 In the June 2023 edition of In Gear, I shared an overview of the 30x30 initiative. There is much to unpack in discussion of this topic as it is both broad-reaching and complex. In this article, we’ll look at a few elements of the 30x30 puzzle in greater detail. To briefl y recap the overview of 30x30 and set the stage for Part II of our discussion… 30x30 is a government-backed initiative that aims to dramatically increase the volume of federally owned, federally administrated lands across America by shifting public and private lands into the hands of government entities (or facade entities that serve the government’s agenda like NGOs, globalist corporations, political activist organizations, etc.). 30x30 was formally incorporated into federal funding and agency planning through President Joe Biden’s Executive Order 14008, “Tackling the Climate Crisis at Home and Abroad.” The goal of 30x30 is to permanently protect 30 percent of the USA’s land and oceans in their natural state by 2030. Implementation of 30x30 is being accomplished piece by piece through a broad range of initiatives including climate change policy, endangered species listings, wilderness and national monument designations, and purchase of “management authority” of private and public land through conservation easements. Those who support 30x30 argue that climate impacts are human-caused, and permanently preserving 30 percent of America’s land and oceans is necessary to reverse climate change. However, real science and data do not justify these extreme policy measures. 30x30 is an unconstitutional policy shift, causing us to become a nation in which both private and public lands are fully controlled by the administrative state. It is critical to note: there is no constitutional or statutory authority for the President, the Department of the Interior, the Department of Agriculture, or any other federal agency to set aside and preserve 30 percent of all land and water in the United States, and no such authority is referenced in EO14008, or in the Biden administration’s 30x30 report entitled “America the Beautiful.” In California, one of the crucial pieces of the puzzle in the effort to advance 30x30 is the Pacifi c Crest Trail (PCT) Management Area, or PCT Corridor. If you’ve been following my reports on Cal4Wheel’s involvement in the planning process for the Sierra and Sequoia National Forest Revised Land Management Plans (Plans), you’ll recall that the Forest Service incorporated a PCT Corridor within these Plans – the corridor encompasses a 1-mile wide area across the full length of the PCT within each national forest. This is highly problematic given that a Corridor is a trail buffer zone, and, the National Trails System Act that provides for designation of the PCT does not allow buffer zones. We’ve been fi ghting Forest Service authorization of the PCT Corridor throughout the public comment and objection resolution process for the Plans, then through a campaign to secure Congressional oversight of the Plans, and now… through an effort to secure a Congressional hearing that would set the stage for resolution either through congress or litigation. This battle is of high importance given that the Forest Service has stated that it intends to carry forward expansion of the PCT Corridor through the revised land management planning process for all of the other national forests that host segments of the PCT. So, what does the PCT Corridor accomplish – how does it relate to 30x30? The land within the Corridor would be managed uniquely to achieve a wilderness experience and sense of solitude for hikers, ensure a protected viewshed (the appearance of wilderness when viewing the terrain that extends from the trail), and minimize or eliminate human modifi cation of the landscape. The Pacifi c Crest Trail Association has been a primary driver to create the PCT Corridor – they stated explicitly in a 2021 article that the PCT Corridor is directly tied to implementation of the 30x30 initiative. For advocates of public land access like Cal4Wheel, it is clear that we must be relentless in efforts to have the PCT Corridor removed from the Sierra and Sequoia land management plans, and to prevent it from being implemented in other national forests in California. Another crucial piece of the puzzle to implement 30x30 at both the national level and in California is the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Proposed Rule: Conservation and Landscape Health. The Rule would authorize the BLM to create and sell conservation leases on the 247 million acres of public land managed by the BLM across the USA.

Page 13

cal4wheel.com/in-gear 1315.3% of all land within California is managed by the BLM. This means that 15+ million acres of California’s public land would be up for grabs to be stripped away from public access. Through this lease program, the highest bidder would have the authority to ban any/all uses and public access to the leased acreage they are paying for. This could serve to lock access to vast areas of public land through strategically placed leased parcels that serve as entry points to larger expanses of public land; if the lease holder chose to ban human access on that parcel, it would thereby eliminate human access to the unleased public land that is situated beyond the parcel itself. This rule is problematic on multiple levels and should be withdrawn. Major issues include:• The BLM does not have the authority to create this rule. • It would likely raise revenue for the government, which is something the BLM does not have authority to do. • The rule is unnecessary: the BLM is already required to comply with dozens of other laws and executive orders to prioritize conservation on public lands. • It will implement Landscape Health Standards that will create confusion and chaos in the BLM permitting process for organized and casual recreational use of BLM lands. • The rule could easily lead to foreign intervention in public land management by opening the opportunity to lease BLM land to both American and foreign entities. Additionally, this rule expands the 30x30 agenda by requiring the BLM to take a “precautionary approach” when authorizing land uses that may impair “ecosystem resilience.” Given that the proposed rule is based largely on EO14008, we can conclude that nearly everything impairs “ecosystem resilience” and contributes to climate change. EO14008 laments that only land in its “natural state” meets the 30x30 requirements. Since this administration believes that ecosystem resilience is necessary to defeat climate change and only land in its natural state will meet the country’s climate goals, we can assume that the protection of the natural state means limited or no human use of multiple use lands. As public land access advocates, we are concerned that this rule will be used to restrict or eliminate motorized recreation, dispersed camping, and other forms of outdoor recreation on public lands. It will provide a new way for environmentalist organizations to create de facto wilderness where they have previously failed to get Congress to make wilderness designations. This Rule has been hotly contested - over 216,000 comments were submitted in total. Strong support for the Rule emerged from extreme environmentalist organizations. However, there was also a strong demonstration of united opposition from organizations that advocate for public land access, and individuals among the OHV and outdoor recreation communities. I submitted comments on behalf of Cal4Wheel to oppose the Proposed Rule, and I know that many Cal4Wheel members submitted comments as well (many thanks to each of you!). In a future In Gear article, we’ll take a closer look at how Endangered Species Listings fold into the 30x30 initiative. In the meantime, we must continue pushing back on each piece of attempted implementation of the 30x30 puzzle. Some actions you may consider include increasing your knowledge about 30x30. American Stewards of Liberty provides a ton of information on 30x30 that is easy to access in articles and videos. The Heritage Foundation illuminates the truth about the massive lack of real science and data to support the 30x30 agenda. We welcome you to join the Cal4Wheel Access & Stewardship Committee – we meet monthly to discuss current issues impacting OHV recreation on public lands, and ways to get involved in efforts to preserve public land access. If you have questions or would like to discuss 30x30 further, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I am eager to help members get involved so that we can increase our impact to preserve access for OHV recreation throughout California’s public lands.

DEL ALBRIGHTSustainable Motorized Recreation AdvocateIs your club ticked off at a neighboring club? Are you drifting away from your club because of the behavior of a few folks? Do you find yourself attending fewer club/group meetings these days? Do you feel like your opinion does not count? Are you ready to just say heck with it and walk away as a volunteer? Are you tired of the politics and clicks in your club? In other words, do egos and personalities rule your recreation? In my travels around the country helping folks get organized and keep trails open, I have seen too many of the above problems. Don’t get me wrong, there are tons of great clubs that are doing just fine. But I’ve seen my share of personalities driving folks away from organized recreation. There are ways to fix that.In my opinion, our future lies in folks joining and staying active in organized recreation. The more we band together and stay tuned into what’s happening with our trails, the better our chances of having a sport in the future. The more we separate or alienate from each other, the less chance we have of surviving as a recreational pursuit. We must be together at every opportunity. This means that our local clubs/groups must be viable and effective. I am constantly reminded of the anti-access (radical environmental groups) slogan “think globally; act locally.” They have got it figured out. They preach keeping the big picture in mind while taking baby steps locally towards achieving the big picture. It works!Making Swiss CheeseIn large business corporations and management, there’s a concept called the “Swiss Cheese” approach. Swiss cheese has a lot of holes in it to make the cheese what it is. When a manager faces a tremendously complex task, the Swiss cheese approach is to make one hole at a time until you have your block of cheese done. In other words, like a long hike in the backcountry, it’s just one step at a time until you reach your destination. This is where the local level involvement is so significant. If we’re all taking baby steps, punching holes in the big block of Swiss cheese, eventually, we’ll achieve the big picture – responsible and sustainable motorized access for all!It starts with your local club or group. It begins with a few folks deciding to get past personalities and get something done for the greater good. It “They” Are Killing our AccessHow Egos and Personalities Could be our downfallstarts with not letting someone else control how you feel about your sport or club.ExpectationsIf you have personality issues in your club or group, I suggest that before you give up, you confront them head-on. Let folks know how you feel and what you expect. Only then can a group or club decide if they want to make changes to accommodate your wishes. But to me, it is such a shame to see someone drop out of a group without letting folks know the reason why. It’s similar to telling a boss at work what’s wrong from your perspective so the problem can be fixed. Many times, bosses don’t know what the employees know. So, by letting someone know there’s a problem, at least you give them a chance to fix it.There’s an old saying I use a lot: “A complaint is never legitimate until it’s voiced to someone who can fix it.” If personalities rule your recreation, I suggest you speak up and clear the air. Get to the “peace table” and talk it out. Go face to face, and don’t try to solve it on the forums. Find solutions or compromises that all the parties can live with. But whatever you do, give it a shot before you give up.When I help folks get past personality issues, I always remind them that we are not out to change who someone is, only how they behave in our group. If a particular behavior alienates other club members, we must find a way to change that behavior. It can be done, but only through communications that are pretty open and honest. In the leadership training I give folks, I drive home the point that we must let folks know our expectations -- those things that make us smile and enjoy our sport (or our job or anything else). The same holds true for a club or a volunteer committee. If you have expectations that are not being fulfilled, then let someone know. , By doing so, you increase your chances of staying in the game and helping to punch holes in that big block of cheese. -Del cal4wheel.com/in-gear 19

20 IN GEAR October/ November 2023CHRIS SILVEIRARAFFLE VEHICLE CHAIRThis year’s WARN sponsored 2023/24 Raffle Vehicle build is coming along great and we’re getting some very positive feedback at booths. Recently the 2023 Jeep Gladiator was up at the High Sierra Poker Run, where folks from the Central District were able to check it out up close. The build has taken a short break for the last month or so as this year’s builder, Fred Williams, has had prior obligations. But don’t worry, the Jeep is back at his shop, and he is jumping back into it to try and wrap up the build before we take the Jeep to SEMA! Some folks may not realize that most years, the Jeep is displayed at our Cal4Wheel booth at SEMA in Las Vegas. This gives the association a large audience to publicly thank all of our sponsors who have donated product or time to our annual Raffle Vehicle program. We spend the week thanking sponsors and making relationships with new ones to help continue to make our program a success.Recapping our build thus far this year, we are so fortunate to have so many great companies working with us. First and foremost, WARN Industries agreed to be the lead sponsor for this year’s vehicle. We purchased a red 2023 Gladiator because of that. Well, WARN also owns Fabtech Suspension, Factor 55, and Fab Fours. So, we worked with these companies to also showcase their product on this year’s vehicle. The JT has a Fabtech Suspension system on it, complete with their Dirt Logic Shocks. It will be getting a set of Fabtech Tube Fenders all around in the coming weeks too. It also has Fab Fours front and rear bumpers and rock sliders. For years BFGoodrich Tires has been our go-to tire company for our raffle vehicles, and this year is no different. BFGoodrich set us up with a set of 37” KM3 and a gift certificate for a set of tires to give away at the vehicle drawing during Convention as well! And once again, Greg stepped up at Raceline to give us a set of heavy duty Raceline Wheels, too. The JT will also have support from many other sponsors all throughout it. Rugged Radios has given us a 45-watt mobile GMRS radio kit, Tuffy Security Products worked with Bestop to develop a bedside storage system complete with tonneau cover. There will be Tuffy Security Products storage units inside the JT as well. sPOD has donated a multi-button controller that will run the Baja Designs lights and Eaton E-Lockers. D and C Desings has donated a set of side cowl lights, color matched to the JT. Motive Gear is donating a set of gear for the axles, and Eric Filar will be working with Fred to install the gears and lockers into our axles. Steersmarts jumped onboard to donate a heavy-duty steering kit. Rubicon Trail Adventures is once again donating a guided day trip on the Rubicon to whomever wins this year’s vehicle. Bun Trail Welders is donating a battery welding kit to the vehicle, too. This year’s vehicle is sure to be a hit. As if all of that wasn’t exciting enough, we are also working with Metalcloak, and they have agreed to donate a $5,000 gift certificate as one of the prizes in this year’s raffle vehicle drawing! Thanks so much to all of the sponsors involved in this year’s build! Without all of this support, we wouldn’t be able to have a raffle vehicle to giveaway. Watch your mailboxes in the next month or so for our annual mass mailers to start arriving. Please continue to support the program as this is perhaps the largest fund raising effort we put forth every year. It has a huge impact on the association and continuing the never-ending fight to keep trails open. Every ticket sold matters and we appreciate everyone’s support. Cal4Wheel is actively looking for a chairperson to run the 2024/25 Raffle Vehicle program next year. It’s a great program and if you think you might be interested in helping, please reach out to your districts. WIN-A-WIN-A-JEEP

TOM SEVERINPresident Badlands Off-Road AdventuresI was hanging out in my garage one day with good buddy Bruce. He had a project to work on and I, well, I just felt like hanging out. (It is my garage, after all!)At one point the conversation turned to this nasty malady that afflicts so many men – me included – which I call HOTGS Syndrome. Care to know more? Step inside my garage that Tuesday afternoon…You know, Bruce, we men seem to have difficulty throwing away good stuff. I mean, look at this place. I’ve got stuff everywhere and just can’t throw it away. It’s good stuff, of course, but I have piles of it.I start sorting it out, and I end up moving it from one spot to another spot. Any flat surface — stuff ends up on it. I clear off my work bench, and a week later it’s already cluttered.Look here: On the camping side, I bought six sleeping bags and coolers and stuff for outfitting a couple groups. I keep them because I thought I’d use ‘em again. You never know when you might need it.“I know what you mean buddy,” Bruce looks at me over his shoulder. “What if the grandkids want to go camping?”Sure, this stuff is organized, but do I really need it? This first rack here is all sorts of different camping stuff, including sleeping bags and tents. I don’t know if they’re all good tents, though.Over there you see the bag compressors I use for work. You know my work bench. See the shelves up above? Look at all that crap. Yeah, I’m organized, Bruce, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have too much Do You Suffer From HOTGS Syndrome?crap. What is HOTGS Syndrome? If I want to generate space – meaning I intend to buy something – I have to decide where to put it. What do I get rid of to make room?I could hold a garage sale, but I can’t let go of the stuff. That’s the problem.I know you have the same problem, Bruce. “Of course.”I think this is a common malady that men have. I’m going to give it a name: Holding On To Good Stuff, or HOTGS for short. I pronounce that like “hot guess.”Remember: We’re not hoarding. We’re hanging onto good stuff. There’s a nasty flip side to this. When I do throw out something to create a little space, I immediately have something else to go there. Now, as far as letting go, the best piece of advice I once received: Take a picture of the object, then throw the object away. Hang the picture somewhere prominently, and you can ‘enjoy’ that item forever. How a HOTGS space differs from a normal workspace “You see, Tom,” as Bruce takes a pause. “We don’t have piles of newspapers and magazines. We have good stuff.”And unfinished projects. And heaven forbid you’d 28 IN GEAR October/ November 2023

Page 29

finish one project before starting another. That’s just not the life of a HOTGS man.“Plus, you’d mess up the creative process. Say you have a great idea? Start it before you forget it”“And let’s say you’re working on a project on one side of the garage that belongs on the other side,” the wise sage continues, “As you walk across the garage to put that in its place, how many projects do you see that might distract you?”Not only that, you might have to wait on parts. You have gone on to the next project so you can keep going. If anyone asks why I’m not working on a particular project, I say, Tom Severin photo by CarlaKing.com“I’m waiting for parts.”You know what? I move things from here over to there, then move that one from there over to this space. Get all done, and haven’t accomplished a damn thing. Still don’t have any more space than I did before.Buy pricier items to save spaceOne thing I’ve noticed is that, in some cases, an expensive version is smaller than its cheaper counterpart.“Counterpart? C’mon, Tom. What’s with the big word? I know for a fact you’ve got more parts than you can count! And yet, you can never have enough. Especially spare parts. Spare parts guarantee you won’t ever need that part!”For example, I could replace my stereo system with something that’s smaller and in all likelihood sounds better. The speakers, for sure, are smaller and of higher quality. So, when you decide to replace something, you can replace it with newer technology that’s smaller, better, faster. The exception to that is the TV. It’s gotta be bigger. But they’re flatter, today. Think of the space you save by getting rid of that old cathode ray tube TV and just getting a flat screen. They’re cheap, and you put one everywhere.“Another solution is to hang stuff from the ceiling in the garage,” he adds. But I’ve done that already. The point of this article is that men who suffer from HOTGS simply can’t throw away good stuff.Take those golf clubs that haven’t seen a course since the turn of the century. Or that canoe that hasn’t been in the water in years. Or the racquetball and tennis rackets gathering dust in a closet somewhere. You used to go bow hunting. You can’t pull back the bow anymore. But you don’t give up the bow.You gave up on the sports, but you can’t give up on the sports item.Garage projects simply won’t get doneI come out here all the time and seems like these projects just don’t get done. Oh, I have good excuses, Bruce: It’s too hot in here or Mary Pat hands me a honey-do list. But even if I do get out here, I could spend hours and not get anything done. So, I’m thinking of offering solutions.“There is no solution,” Bruce responds.Hey, Bruce. Remember what William Shatner used to say during the intro to the “Star Trek” episodes: “Space: The Final Frontier.” You see, Bruce, we’ve conquered all the other issues. We just haven’t figured out how to conquer space; this kind of space.“I’ll agree with you there, old buddy.”We have all this stuff and not enough space. I imagine our kids will come in and clean it out someday. It doesn’t mean anything to them.cal4wheel.com/in-gear 29Save 20% with Promo Code CAL4 at www.crawlmag.comNEW LIFE MEMBERSBarry Graffe
