cal4wheel.com/In-Gear 5Win-A-Jeep Raffle Among Highlights of Cal4Wheel’s 65th Convention Susan Jackson lives in Pollack Pines, California, a small town in the Sierra Nevada where a four-wheel drive is a must-have. But her 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee has sat broken down in her driveway for two years, 406,000 miles on the odometer when it busted a while back. A new four-by would be expensive. Was it worth fixing the Grand Cherokee? Her mechanic suggested she buy a ticket for the Cal 4 Wheel Win a Jeep Raffle and keep her fingers crossed. Jackson, who lives with her son Cody, did just that. And on Saturday, February 17, Cal 4 Wheel President Josh Epstein and Win-A-Jeep Chair Chris Silvera pulled the winning red ticket with her name on it during the Association’s annual convention. The Jacksons jumped in Cody’s SUV and made the 3-hour drive to Visalia, where the convention was held, to pick up Susan’s new Gladiator. SHE WON The JEEPShe let out a loud squeal when she got the keys to the fully built red Jeep truck before she and Cody began exploring all of the additions donated by event sponsors… The Jeep Raffle was the highlight of the annual convention, but not the only business taken care of during a weekend at the Visalia Wyndham Hotel. More than 300 club members and individual members from throughout the state attended. The weekend agenda included the Past Presidents Dinner, a Life Member Breakfast, vehicle show, seminars, General Assembly, and Awards Banquet. In between was plenty of time to see old friends, make new ones, and share tales of the trails. See more coverage beginning on page 11. This year’s convention was hosted by the South District and Chaired by Bonnie Ferguson and Ada Torres. One important decision: The 2025 convention will be held in Sacramento. See you there! PRESIDENT’S REportJOSH EPSTEINPRESIDENTJosh@cal4wheel.comAs I sit here and finish writing this article, it’s a few days till I load my family into our truck with the Win A Jeep currently on a trailer behind it and head north to Convention. I love convention and what it stands for and I can’t help but think about how monumental this particular convention is, as its 65 years since this great Association was started. SIXTY FIVE YEARS! Just think about that for a minute – it has been 6 years since the Korean War ended, the Vietnam war hasn’t started, we as a nation haven’t even thought about landing on the moon! On my long trips up and down this state I often ponder what troubles our beloved Steve Morris had to contend with and if he had any inclination of what he started and if it would be around for 65 years? At the time when I snapped this picture of Steve Morris (speaking) and Jim Bramham at Convention in 2019, I didn’t realize how profound it would be to me today. Steve stood in front of everyone and regaled stories from the past and you could hear a pin drop in that room as he spoke, well, other than the laughter as Steve knew how to tell a funny story. As Convention looms in a few days (to this writing), my 2-year term as President of California Four Wheel Drive Association is up and I’m looking at reelection to my second term of this great Association. This has been one of the greatest accomplishments/Jobs I have ever done and I wouldn’t have even considered it if it weren’t for these two men. I’m also proud of the fact that my personal club, The Hemet Jeep Club, was one of the original charter members of Cal4Wheel and this fateful weekend I was there as my clubs delegate not knowing much of anything of the Cal4Wheel BOD and felt like a small ant in a huge world not knowing very many people. I had a chance to talk to Steve Morris that weekend as by dumb luck, I ran into him in a hallway and just wanted to thank him for all he has done and we bs’d in that hallway about my home club, his love for the Rubicon and so on. Steve treated me like I was the most important person in that moment and even though he had a ton of other things to do, he stood with me and made me feel important. We shook hands and went on our separate ways that evening. I had ZERO ambitions of being in the position I am currently and it was great to talk to him and hear old tales. Little did I know, that would be the last time I would talk to Steve as he passed away later that year on the Rubicon doing what he loved. The man next to Steve is Jim Bramham – I had no idea who Jim was at the time other than he was a past President and seemed like an okay person and maybe even a little intimidating. Little did I know at the time that Jim would become a great friend and a mentor to me. Convention is a time of celebration and we should all pause for a moment and reflect back of the great things we have accomplished, even the bad ones. Remember, we have to have a few bad days to appreciate the good ones. I hope that I touch someone like Jim and Steve (and many other members of this great Association) touched me and maybe motivate someone in a similar fashion. As each and every member of this great Association is proud of the work our beloved Steve Morris started and accomplished, I’m sure Steve is looking down on all of us smiling at what we continue to do for this great Association! Thank you to every person that has been there since the beginning or came after that has helped bring the California Four Wheel Drive Association to see its 65th Birthday! Cal4Wheel is our Association and its our responsibility to make sure its around for another 65 years – which at times can feel daunting especially with these changing times we are living in. I’m excited for what the future brings for Cal4Wheel as we navigate these turbulent waters and adapt to a world that is night and day Continued on Page 76 IN GEAR Febuary/ March 2024Steve Morris

Continued from Page 6different from when Cal4Wheel was born. The BOD and I have been working diligently on adapting as you will all come to see with the new Raffle Vehicle is unveiled and when we present all the hard work and dedication from each and every member of the BOD to the Delegates. If you were unable to attend this year, I am very sorry as Bonnie Fergueson and Aida Torres have been working their butts off to put on one heck of a celebration for our 65th Birthday! Thank you ladies and thank you to every other volunteer that has worked behind the scenes to put this party together. In closing, no matter what happens with my reelection, I want you all to know that it has been my sincere honor and upmost privilege to be your President these past two years. It has humbled me on many different fronts and I can’t thank you enough for the opportunity. If by the publishing of this article, the Delegates have decided to allow me to continue on for another term, I promise to work harder and learn from my mistakes and do the very best I can to assure the celebration of the 130th year of Cal4Wheel. I need to finish packing, writing reports and so on for this weekend, so, Till the next article..cal4wheel.com/In-Gear 7CHRIS SILVEIRANORTH DISTRICT VICE PRESIDENTndvp@cal4wheel.comPROTECTIONHope everyone hasn’t washed away in all the winter storms brewing up and down the state. I know its been wet up here in Santa Rosa since the end of January. Since the last issue of our In-Gear I have been busy trying to help sell raffle vehicle tickets at various shows trying to help close out the 2023/24 Win a Jeep. In January a group of volunteers organized and helped out with a booth at the International Sportsman’s Expo in Sacramento. Some of us met on Wednesday of the week of the show to load up booth supplies and head over to Cal Expo to setup for the 2024 ISE show. We had a mix of cold evenings, sunny days and rain throughout the 4 day show, but overall did very well. We signed up about 12 members throughout the show and sold a good amount of raffle vehicle tickets. Thanks to the Hi-Landers, Railtown and other individual volunteers for all of your support at the show. A few weeks ago, I loaded up and headed down to the King of the Hammers event to work with Don Rybarcyzk at our booth. My dad and cousin came down with me also to help out. Dave Cole and Hammerking Productions were generous enough to donate another booth to Cal4wheel this year. Thank you so much for that. While the rest of the state was swimming in rain storms, my week down at Hammers wasn’t bad. Got a little windy a few days if you can believe that and only rained on us for one day. Not bad. The attendance seemed to be up at KOH, however we didn’t get as much attention at our booth as we had hoped. We only signed up a handful of members, and sold a low amount of raffle vehicle tickets there. It would be very helpful if we could find some more volunteers to help in the South District to work the booth at this event, even if for only a few days, or a few hours a day. More hands make light work. I would like to encourage folks to consider, what can you do to help? This association, and others like it operate on volunteers. When someone thinks, “someone else can do this or that”, well, there isn’t anyone else. Its all about us. We can get out of this association what we’re willing to put into it. Cal4wheel has a lot of history of accomplishing some amazing things up and down the state. Be it directly through the Association or efforts through our individual members or clubs. There is evidence of this on almost every trail we explore in our vehicles. We’re always looking for help, so if you think you may have some time or skills to offer, reach out. VICE PRESIDENT REPORT

8 IN GEAR Febuary/ March 2024I am about to head up to our state convention. Hopefully more of you are coming, or should I say here at Convention. Those in the south district are the fewest registered to attend, sad since it’s a south event. With Bonnie in the lead we (really just Bonnie) have been busy with getting ready for 2024 Convention, please come out and support us, even volunteer with Bonnie. Let’s enjoy and have a great time. Look for our newest Cal4Wheel Raffle vehicle. Do you like it? I believe it’ll be a hit. Hopefully at convention we find a chair for this vehicle. Chris is unable to continue support of the Raffle vehicle but many thanks to Chris. He has the newest vehicle setup with a builder, vehicle in place, vendor donations at the builder, what a fantastic job. KOH is over. Ole supported us while we were there, he was out there for three weeks. Chris and others (his Dad and his cousin Ken), and me, have been out there the last week, Saturday to Saturday. Sales have been slow, very disappointing. Lots of vendors and good weather until Thursday, with rain but not nearly as much as the week before. Thanks to my friend and club member Bob Bissel, we had a great place to camp, away from the crowds and dust. Rose joined us for a short while, unfortunately the meetings this year were 60 miles away. Next month I’ll be at Desert Safari brought to us by TDS Club. Let’s here it for a big success. I will also be at Pomona fairgrounds on March 16-l7 for CA OVERLAND POWERSPORTS 2024 Expo. I am in need of volunteers to assist in our booth. I’m told they have sold out the vendor booths and it’ll be bigger than before. In April Danette, our south district Membership Chair, will be supporting Scouts West in Calico. Email her to sign up to help her in the booth. Then in May is HDR, we always can use help there. Contact Keith or Josh. Danny has been helping us with booths and as our south district merchandize person. Unfortunately, due to personal circumstances he can no longer help us. Please consider joining us and helping in our booths, as our merchandise person, or other spots. Also join me in prayer for Danny and his family. I almost forgot to include the biggest news. Brian, president of my club, came up with a great idea. He is the sites for several virtual online 4x4 clubs. He has posted information about Cal4Wheel on these sites and we will hopefully see some join us as members. In case you are not aware, online clubs have been popping up and some have thousands of members. Some of them cross state lines but not all. They simply post when a run is and where to meet. Anyone interested simply shows up. They don’t hold face to face meetings like typical clubs that we are used to. They typically do not have bylaws, no dues, just go wheeling when they want. With Brian’s help we are trying to get them informed about Cal4Wheel and the possibility of loosing trails and how to fight to keep them open. VICE PRESIDENT REPORTcal4wheel.com/In-Gear 9DAVID ROCHA IICENTRAL DISTRICT VICE PRESIDENTcdvp@cal4wheel.com A Lifetime of Cal4Wheel I hope that everyone and their families had a great time during the holiday season. The Central District has been hard at work to help Cal4Wheel and the membership. We have been working on several upgrades for Cal4Wheel and finding new Corporate Sponsors and Associate Memberships. The Central District had our District Meeting on Jan 20th at the Selma Portuguese Hall. A huge THANK YOU to the Kingsburg 4wd club for hosting the meeting. At the meeting we had a great turnout and had an amazing lunch provided by Kingsburg 4wd club members. We voted in the new CD Sec/Treas Robert Escalera and re-elected Mike Magana in as the CD Membership Chair. If you recognize Robert’s name, it is because he was a past BOD member of the Central District. Thank you to Robert and Mike for stepping up to the position. Registration has opened for the 2024 Molina Ghost Run May 10-12 at Hollister Hills SVRA Area 5. Don’t forget to put it in your plans and start getting everything ready to have a great weekend! At Molina we have levels of four wheeling for everyone with five different groups of four wheeling. After the four wheeling you can get ready for the great BBQ dinner put on by the same Cal4Wheel members and club as before, then sit back and enjoy the three raffles, so make sure that the whole family comes to enjoy the raffles. Get ready for the next Central District Meeting at 9 a.m. on April 20. The meeting will be hosted by Ready-2-Rock and located at Giotto’s Alarm Tech, 1100 Security Ct, Tulare Ca 93274. I have literally been born into Cal4Wheel and as I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s at district meetings and BOD meetings, I also grew up working committee at different club events and Cal4Wheel events my entire life throughout the state. I finally joined Cal4Wheel myself in 2004 and have been on the CD BOD since 2020. I have always tried to work with all Cal4Wheel and any other organization that I could to benefit Cal4Wheel in any way possible. Thank you, David Rocha CD VP

Aloha: Successful Convention in Visalia in the Books Four wheelers and delegates from off-road clubs across the state journeyed to Visalia in February for the 65th Annual Cal4Wheel Convention. Bonnie Ferguson was the 2024 Convention Chair, which had a Hawaiian theme, and Ada Torres was the co-chair. Attendees were kept busy with a balance of social events and business meetings. The Board of Directors met Friday, before a dinner was held for Past Presidents, and other attendees enjoyed a taco bar and the hospitality room. Saturday included a Life Member Breakfast, vehicle show, seminars, and a General Assembly before the Awards Banquet. NATURAL RESOURCES CONSULTANT REPORTROSE WINNNATURAL RESOURCES CONSULTANTrwinn@cal4nrc.com14 IN GEAR Febuary/ March 2024From Resume Coaching to Resource Consulting I’ve had the great joy and privilege of working with Cal4Wheel as the Natural Resources Consultant since February 2022. My initial encounter with this role came as a complete surprise, as I wasn’t aware that this line of work existed until I crossed paths with members of Cal4Wheel. Before working with Cal4Wheel, my professional endeavors centered on university career counseling, leading internship programs, resume writing, and college course instruction. During that season of my career in my personal time, I was involved in citizen advocacy for trail access in Sierra National Forest. I’ve always enjoyed spending time in the mountains and coastal areas of California hiking, backpacking, camping, fishing, hunting - and I’ve raised my daughters to enjoy all the beauty and adventure that this kind of lifestyle affords. By 2010, we had experienced an onslaught of trail closures in Sierra National Forest, most of which were unexpected by the local community, and poorly explained by forest managers and staff. In response to these closures, I became involved with a group of locals in citizen advocacy. We attempted to open conversations with the Forest Service and seek resolution for trail closures, and in the process, we learned a lot! Most of the closures were attributed to endangered species protection, creation of wilderness study areas, and decommissioning of trails that were deemed as low usage and low value by forest managers. Our research led us to information about Congressionally set limitations to the Forest Service’s scope of authority as forest managers, the rights of and responsibilities of us (the public) in land management decisions, and the Constitutionally vested power of county level leaders to keep federal agencies in-check from overreach of authority. In those early years of my involvement, we had some minimal impact in keeping trails open, but we had big wins in building relationships and shared understanding with our local county representatives. Those relationships with the county proved to be of tremendous value in 2021, when we experienced a “temporary” forest closure order in August that was justified by the Forest Service by “fear of catastrophic fire.” As a group of citizens, we shared the fear of catastrophic fire – we had all just experienced the devastation of having 380,000 acres of our beloved forest incinerated by the Creek Fire in 2020. For everyone living in the mountain and foothill communities, catastrophic fire was a real and well understood threat. However, we also understood that the Forest Service had zero authority to close an entire national forest over “fear” – there was no legal justification for the closure order. We took our concern to our county board of supervisors and appealed to them to instruct the Forest Service to reverse the temporary closure. As a result of our prior efforts over the last 10+ years, we quickly gained the board of supervisors support and they followed through to instruct the Forest Supervisor to reopen Sierra National – and since county authority supersedes the authority of federal agencies, the Forest Service had to comply! In the course of gathering local support for reversal of the temporary forest closure order, I had the joy of meeting Mike Magana and Mark Cave from the Central District of Cal4Wheel. They shared about the Natural Resources Consultant position, and after checking it out, I knew Continued on Page 15 Rose and her daughters adventuring.

Page 15

cal4wheel.com/In-Gear 15Continued from Page 14 it would be a dream come true to get to work in this kind of capacity as my daily job. I pursued the opportunity and was thrilled to secure Cal4Wheel’s approval to partner with the Association as a contractor in this role! The issues in public land access that Cal4Wheel has faced over the last two years have hovered around a few major themes: large regional land management planning, travel management planning, endangered species issues, overreach of federal and state agency authority in land management decisions, and the 30x30 initiative. These themes have unfolded in areas we enjoy off-roading up and down the state, from South Cow Mountain, the Rubicon, and Eldorado National Forest in the North, to Oceano Dunes, Clear Creek Management Area, and Sierra National Forest in Central California, to the Mojave region, Red Rock Canyon State Park, and the stunning deserts of the South. For more details check out my monthly reports, District reports, and Access Issue updates for information on each of the battles we’ve been involved in. My forecast for the next year is that our battles will continue to hover around the same themes. As an Association that is vested in preserving public land access for OHV recreation, our active engagement in these issues is now more important than ever. Nearly every issue that we face takes years to unfold from start to finish. It is imperative that we continue to build on the strong foundation that we have now to accelerate our impact in the next year. My goals as Natural Resources Consultant will focus on advancing our position in each of the battles we’re currently engaged in, while expanding and strengthening our partnerships with local, state, and federal agency representatives, Congressional representatives, and alliances within the OHV recreation industry. We also need to open doors for collaboration with all vested stakeholders in public land access, like other outdoor recreation groups (IE: rock climbers, hunters, rockhounders, etc.), cattle ranchers, the logging industry, regional business owners and residents that live in the areas near our treasured recreation sites. It is also my goal to build up Cal4Wheel membership engagement in public land access advocacy. We have many clubs who are doing outstanding work to keep trails open! We can build on that foundation to involve all clubs and members, and become a much bigger player at the statewide and national level of public land access advocacy. As such, I invite you all to get involved! One easy way is to join the monthly Cal4Wheel Access & Stewardship Committee meeting held via Zoom at 6:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month. This committee functions as a hub of information and resources to make it easy for members to get involved in public land access issues as they are happening all over the state. I send a heartfelt Thank You to all the members who are already actively engaged! If you haven’t joined in yet, I look forward to seeing you on a monthly call soon! Outside of Cal4Wheel, I enjoy living out in the country in the sleepy town of Tollhouse in the foothills of the Central Sierra Nevada Mountains (and not too far from where the High Sierra Poker Run is held every year!). My daughters are now ages 21 and 18, and we continue to enjoy getting out into the forest or on the coast for all sorts of adventures as often as we’re able. My daughters are avid rock climbers, and they convinced me to give it a try last year, so I am now a (very) amateur rock climber and happy to have another way to challenge myself while having a great time with family and friends. February of 2024 marks my two-year anniversary as the Natural Resources Consultant for Cal4Wheel. It’s hard to believe that two years have passed already – time does literally fly when you’re having fun! Cal4Wheel is an amazing organization and I’ve been blessed to gain a huge list of new friends among all the members! As the rest of 2024 takes shape, I look forward to making more headway and realizing more wins in our public land access efforts in the coming year – and I’m eager to continue working closely with all of you in the process! If you would like to discuss issues related to public land access that are affecting your club or trails in your region, please reach out to me at rwinn@cal4nrc.com. Since 1959, our non-profit organization has actively promoted the advancement of vehicle-oriented outdoor recreation. We are the largest organization of this type in California and represent owners of all makes and models of 4WD vehicles, as well as non-owners who support responsible vehicle-oriented recreation.HELPING 4 WHEELERSWe maintain a full-time office in Sacramento. Our staff and volunteers work closely with legislators and land use managers to provide input, influence, expertise, and manpower to keep lands open to 4WD vehicle access. Many successful battles have been waged and won to keep trails open all over the state. We keep our members informed about important issues and changing laws through our bimonthly magazine, In Gear, and regular email updates.HAVING FUNMembers enjoy association-sponsored events all year round. These events cover every type of terrain in every corner of the state. Whether you are interested in extremely challenging “hard rock” trails for the experienced enthusiast, or milder runs for the new four-wheeler, we have several events just for you. Many of our member clubs also sponsor monthly runs open to all.MAKING A DIFFERENCEOur members are active in conservation projects throughout California. Projects, which are coordinated with local agencies, can range from tree planting to removing junk cars from remote areas, from closing off entrances of hazardous mine shafts to repairing trail damage. We have received national recognition by winning “Take Pride in California” awards, and “Volunteers For Public Lands” national awards. Many clubs also have Adopt-A-Trails that they maintain.

18 IN GEAR Febuary/ March 2024cal4wheel.com/in-gear 18WIN-A-JEEP CHRIS SILVEIRA2023/24 RAFFLE VEHICLE CHAIRI hope everyone is as excited to win this Jeep as I am! What a year this has been as we approach the Convention. Can’t believe this incredible Jeep is going to be awarded to some lucky person Saturday night. I hope everyone liked the spin on the vehicle this year with Fred Williams recording the build progress on his YouTube channel for all to follow along. But Fred couldn’t do it alone without some great products on the Jeep this year. WARN Industries stepped up big this year and sponsored our very own raffle vehicle. WARN has been around a long time, and consequently owns quite a few well-known brands that were able to help too. Starting at the top, WARN donated one of their winches, FabFours donated a set of front and rear bumpers, Fabtech Suspension donated a suspension system, their Dirt Logic shocks, front and rear tube fenders, rocksliders, front and rear differential covers and an interior Molle system for overhead storage in the cab, and Factor 55 donated a synthetic rope for the winch and a thimble attachment. Thank you, guys, so much for supporting this program! Well, that wasn’t all. Many other companies got involved this year too. Rugged Radios gave us a 45watt mobile GMRS radio along with a set of handheld GMRS radios, Baja Designs donated a set of their Squadron Lights and an sPOD to operate them, D & C Designs donated a set of their side color matched cowl lights. Motive Gear sent down Eric Filar himself to work with Fred and install a set of 4.88 gears and Eaton E-Lockers in our JT’s axles. Tuffy Security set us up with some console and underseat lockable storage systems and a bed mounted storage system combined with a Bestop tanneau cover. H3R Performance gave us a couple of their high-quality fire extinguishers and mounts. SteerSmarts set us up with a steering system and adjustable front and rear trackbars. JE Reel gave us a set of custom heavy-duty drivelines. Rubicon Trail Adventures is once again donating a day trip on the Rubicon Trail to the winner, into Spider Lake. MorrFlate has donated a portable compressor, 4-way tire inflation/deflation kit and a GlueTread kit for all of your tire needs. Speaking of tires, BFGoodrich has once again donated a set of their 37” KM3 tires wrapped around a set of bronze heavy duty Raceline Wheels. This year Jeep Jamboree USA is also donating a registration on any one of their standard trips across the US. If you don’t win the Jeep, don’t worry. There’s more. BFGoodrich has also donated a gift certificate for a set of 5 tires of your choice up to 37”. ARB has donated one of their Hydraulic Jacks coupled with a set of suction mounts from SeaSucker. SeaSucker also donated a 4-gallon waterPORT and mount system. There are amazing parts on this year’s vehicle and some cool extra things we get to raffle off. Speaking of raffling off, consider purchasing your raffle vehicle tickets every year if you’re able. The raffle vehicle program/project is a large commitment, approximately 15 months from start to finish. It is one of the biggest fund-raising efforts we put forth to help fund the never-ending fight to keep your favorite trails and riding areas open. Can’t swing it, no problem, sell ‘em to your neighbors and friends. This year alone, we mailed out over 25k tickets to our membership. That’s over $500,000 in tickets in circulation, just for our own membership. Imagine the impact it would have if we were able to generate those kinds of funds. Just incredible. This year’s Jeep attended over 20 events up and down the state. Volunteers put approximately 4,500 miles on their vehicles getting this Jeep up and down the state to help sell raffle tickets and teach the public about what Cal4wheel does. It is no small undertaking. I for one, want to say THANK YOU to each and every person who has worked with me over the past 3 years on this program. From guidance when I took on this role, to putting in hours in a booth on behalf of Cal4wheel, to towing the Jeep all over the place to shows. Without you all, this program would not be possible, and frankly, we still need more help. If you think you’d like to help, reach out. We can always use help on the vehicle relays up and down the state to lighten the load. We can always use help at booths sell memberships and raffle tickets. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about Cal4wheel and make a ton of new friends. As of this writing we still do not have a replacement raffle vehicle chairperson. Reach out to your district VP’s or contact the office if you think you might be interested. It’s a fun job surrounded by great people who all want to help. Let’s go wheeling! WIN-A-JEEP

DEL ALBRIGHTSustainable Motorized Recreation Advocate - Cal4 Life MemberSaving trails and the whole sport of motorized recreation depends on many factors, but without those factors, our trails and our sports will be in jeopardy. Primary in the list is local club involvement in issues and organizational growth. Without local membership support and involvement, a larger umbrella group (state, regional, or national) will push water uphill and waste precious resources. From what we’ve seen, working with boards at all levels, before an organization or group can invest time, money, and staff in an issue, it must assess the value of the level of service to its members. Noted land use advocate Don Amador crafted this diagram of how many organizations develop a strategy for level of service: What will Save the future of motorized recreation? What to expect from your mebmership organization.Alligator Pit and Gatekeeper area, crews at work. The outcome (middle of the diagram) estimates the level of service a group can invest in an issue. This outcome includes member support, priority/timing of the issue, and the potential value to the group. A larger organization cannot take these factors lightly to survive long term. FOTR Rubicon Trail Work Weekend with Jeepers Jamboree; Roots Team unloading Jason Brown’s truck., Save My Trails Slide Show Save my Trails Slide ShowContinued from Page 22A great example is the Rubicon Trail. Twenty-plus years ago, local clubs and users banded together to save the trail from closure. Immediately, state, regional, and national groups recognized this local involvement and jumped in to help fight for the trail. The value returned to the larger groups included membership growth and broader recognition. Everyone won! It worked. The level of service from larger organizations matched the local interest! We have heard members complain that their state/regional/national representatives do not do enough for them or their trail. At the same time, that member and the local club have done nothing to help the overall cause/issue. It’s like the blame game – pointing fingers instead of putting boots on the ground. The level of service from bigger groups hinges on locals being involved and invested. It works both ways to create a sustainable future for motorized recreation. The future of motorized recreation depends on a few simple things and some proven formulas: • More unity in organized recreation leadership, including better communications and fewer turf battles. • Finding the money to get more full-time people doing land use and leading volunteers. • More training for volunteers who don’t know how to cope with government regulations, safety and EPA requirements, and paperwork.• A centralized source of information and coordination nationwide that people can trust to bring us all together so the messages are not disjointed but orchestrated for future wins. • Legal strength – with attorneys who know land use and are available to all. • Finding the key to getting people to join organized groups and not just be virtual.• Getting past egos and personalities in OHV recreation. Focusing positive energy on the factors mentioned here will save the future of motorized recreation while finding reciprocity between local interests and larger group investment. Simply said, we must always work together, in cooperation, and with a positive focus toward a sustainable future.cal4wheel.com/In-Gear 23

24 IN GEAR Febuary/ March 2024RoughWheelers 4WD Southern California, South District RoughWheelers amended its bylaws to include GMRS – figuring no one uses CB anymore. They’re on Channel 17 … but you have to ask for the private tone. The Club made a run to McIver’s Cabin, a popular destination that serves as a shelter for hikers of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). It is about 6,690 feet near the Kiavah Wilderness, in the Scodie Mountains area of the Sequoia National Forest at the end of the McIver 4X4 road part of Forest Service Road 27S11. The trip was documented in the Club’s newsletter by Atlas, Andrew Steffy’s 7-year-old German Shepherd. CLUB ROUNDUPGear Grinders 4WD Ridgecrest, South District Mary and Jerry Grimsley have been keeping an eye on trail conditions in Death Valley, where Hurricane Hilary’s damage forced cancellation of the 2023 Panamint Valley Days. “We are crossing our fingers that we don’t have any flash-flooding during any summer rains,” Mary said. “I also wanted to get the word out to our members to NOT go into Death Valley National Park if the roads/trails are still marked closed on their website. Fines are very high and you risk getting your vehicle impounded and a hefty bill for the possible professional tow job.” Here’s the report: 1. Lower Stone Canyon – BLM needs to fill in ditch in middle of the road that was approx. 4 feet deep back in late November. At the time we traveled it, it was a total rocky river bed that was only visible by the width of the creosotes. Fall Zero was possibly a little taller, but the by-pass was still intact. 2. Upper Stone - to the split was also a rocky river bed, as was the trail to the Defense Mine. 3. Lookout Mountain – trail suffered no damage, like it hadn’t rained there at all. 4. Isham - is passible for well-set up vehicles. 37” tires, a lift, & lockers are must. 5. Fish - is passable from Trona Road access to Wingate Road. 6. Goler Canyon – Inyo County has cleared the waterfall at the beginning and the trail is passable to Striped Butte. They have also cleaned up the Wingate road along the base of the Panamints. 7. Coyote Canyon – After 3 trips of Gear Grinders clearing and moving large boulders, it is passable to the mine. 8. South Park Canyon – Is passable to Chicken Rock. It was cleared shortly after Hurricane Hilary so vehicles could be retrieved. People were helicoptered out immediately after the storm passed through. 9. Pleasant Canyon – It took the local miner 13 hours to come down from the Porter Mine with his bull dozer. We couldn’t believe the condition of the trail, even though he had been down with the dozer, and can’t imagine what it was like before. Death Valley National Park is currently working on the trail up Pleasant and around to

Page 25

cal4wheel.com/In-Gear 25South Park Canyon/Chicken Rock. It has been reported to the owners at Ballarat that a group had made the whole loop back in early December, but as of today, it is still closed on the DVNP website. A warning to all: do not enter closed trails on DVNP lands if they are marked closed on the website. We know of one vehicle owner who was fined $2,500, had his vehicle impounded, and was not allowed to drive it out himself, but had to hire a towing service for another $2,500. CLUB ROUNDUP10. Upper Jackpot Canyon – Totally passable right after the storm, like it had barely rained there. 11. Jail Canyon – No report yet. We will check it out soon. And Finally … Will the Real Clovis Club Please Stand Up? We did a little mixing that didn’t match in the last issue of In Gear and need to extend a new and improved welcome to Clovis 4x4s, who have rejoined Cal4Wheel. We were able to grab a shot of the club at the Convention – Welcome back!

Bruce was in a bind. While far into the Rubicon Trail, both axles on his Wrangler broke. Inquiring into how that happened, he had no idea. Maybe they were just worn out! Hopping in a buddy’s car, they drove out to get cell coverage. Bruce dialed up a junkyard in Sacramento and learned they had a Wrangler like his. Even better, it had two good axles. Plus no days lost waiting for ordered parts. They had them right now. Those axles in hand – and after a visit to a parts store in South Lake Tahoe for ball joints – Bruce was on his way back to the Rubicon to repair the vehicle. The trip was saved. Spare parts from a junkyard? Yes! In fact, regular four-wheelers learn early on the value of this under-the-radar resource. Self-service vs. retail style.Junkyards come in two basic formats. Self-service: Customers remove parts from cars in the lot. Retail style: Customers select what they need from parts in the yard. The local staff dismantles the part for you. Junkyards tend to stock high-demand items, such as fenders, mirrors and taillights. But they also carry a selection of alternators, axles, and all other parts. Some junkyards focus on particular brands. AMC Auto Salvage, near Los Angeles, collected only Jeep and Mercedes vehicles. (Sadly, AMC is closed. I visited many times, and really miss the place.) Even if the junkyard isn’t self-service, they might let you walk the grounds. Bringing donuts helps grease the skids. That’s always a lot of fun. You never know what you might find while poking your nose around. Junkyards acquire their vehicles in a number of ways. One common method is to bid on vehicles totaled by insurance companies. While a portion of the vehicle is heavily damaged, other areas contain parts in good working order. Why buy parts from a junkyard? The biggest advantages for shopping at junkyards are cost savings and availability of parts. Parts stores don’t normally carry some of the parts we break. Junkyards generally price their parts at 50% lower than new – sometimes even less. They have a keen sense what new parts cost, so customers are assured of getting good value. Staff are very knowledgeable about the vehicles on their grounds and parts available. A brief phone call will let you know what’s on hand. Junkyards are good places to shop for spare parts. Stock up on those important items without making a large finance commitment. For example, you might score a handful of fuses – worth about $50 – for $5. A real deal, indeed. It’s also a good opportunity to upgrade your vehicle. Grab a like-new lift kit or set of air lockers. Choose from a variety of items to make your vehicle bigger, better and stronger. All at discounted prices. This is why it’s a good idea to stay in touch with the junkyard. They can let you know what they’ve brought in recently. Perhaps somebody recently rolled a new Jeep. There could be some good parts to grab off the vehicle. Junkyard mechanics are a fountain of knowledge. They’re dismantling vehicles all the time. They know what’s good and what’s bad; how to Thank god for Junkyards?Tom Severin4x4 Coachmix and match parts. Junkyards stand by their parts. While junkyards sometimes warrant their parts, they will offer a replacement if the used part doesn’t work. Return the bad part and swap for another. Overall, customers find that parts purchased at junkyards perform well. Remember that the parts are pulled from those areas of the vehicle not affected by the crash. If the vehicle is nearly new, you’re getting a like-new part. Junkyards are willing to call around If the first junkyard doesn’t have the part, don’t fret. Oftentimes, the counter guy is willing to call around. (What’s known affectionately as the Hoot ‘N’ Holler system.) How to find a junkyard. The best method for finding a junkyard is to ask around. Start with someone who owns the same brand of vehicle. That’s how I heard of AMC Salvage many years ago. I talked with other Jeep owners, and learned of a great resource for used parts. If the junkyard has a website, review that for specific details, such as brand(s) of vehicles they specialize in. Call with any questions. Strange as it may sound, a junkyard is a great place to shop for spare and replacement parts. Prices are heavily discounted and, in many cases, the parts are relatively new. It’s possible to upgrade a vehicle for a tidy sum. Consider adding a junkyard (or two) to your list of resources. cal4wheel.com/In-Gear 29
