PRESIDENTS MESSAGE CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION OF 4WD CLUBS, INC. The year 1968 has been eventful for the California Associa-tion of Four Wheel Drive Clubs Inc. Through the efforts of our clubs and officers we have achieved new recognition and understanding from Federal, State and private organizations. New clubs have elected to join our Association which has given us additional strength for true statewide representation. In the years past all have worked, by various methods, to obtain the position wherein we were the recognized voice for four-wheelers in our state. We are now the largest Association of four-wheel drive clubs in existance and we have partially reached our goal. By the numbers of our membership we have strength, by unity and understanding we will hold our strength and by co-operation we will use our strength. Not to long ago all the members of our Association congre-gated four times a year for business meetings and the chance for social activities. Each member knew and understood the other. Problems and achievements were common to all. For administrative purposes the members voted to operate the Association on a three area basis and this no doubt in-creased our efficiency of operation. By the same token we no longer have the opportunity for all members to gather and communicate with each other except at our Annual meeting. We are indeed fortunate to have a membership that will have competition and not resentment, understanding and not jealousy betweer the areas for such could be the downfall of any organization. Let us not loose the oriainal intent of the Association nor the fact that if we did not exist as a true s tatewide Associa-tion then four-wheeling as we know it today would be in jeopardy.

VICE PRESIDENTS REPORT Northern Area With the starting of a new year the north area plans many things. We have nine new clubs with more being planned every day, we have had more club participating this past year with 80 to 85 per cent of the clubs in the north being present at meetings and functions. Due largely to the fine catering and planned events put on by the various clubs hosting the meetings, my thanks to them. We had a very successful Sierre Trek this year under the chair-manship of Ben Pugh. I hope 19691s Trek will be bigger and better. This is the type of organized four wheeling events that is more to the liking of a large number of our Association members. It is my hope to see more of this type of events. I hope that the year 1969 will see the California Association of Four Wheel Drive Clubs be made even better and stronger. Happy four wheeling in 1969. Mike Tatro Central Area Being Vice President of the Central Area of the California Associa-tion of 4WD Clubs Inc. in 1968 has been a very rewarding experience for both myself and family. The Central Area is growing very fast with new clubs forming and joining the California Association of 4WD Clubs Inc. at every area meeting. In 1968 the Central Area accepted 8 new clubs into the Association, with a total membership of over 400 four-wheeling families. The Central Area has created a lot of good will for the State Association through its conservation and recreation projects through-out the year. I hope the member clubs will continue to work together to preserve 4-wheeling in the future as they have in the past. Fred Stailey Southern Area This past year found the Southern Area ready and able to accept the challenges and assume the responsibility of working to assure the continuance of our great sport. I join with all the Southern Area Officers and Committeemen in saying thank you for the support and assistance you provided us this past year. We look forward to the coming year and pledge our full efforts to provide a positive future for the sport of 4-Wheeling. Dick Myers

HISTORY OF THE ASSOCIATION The California Association of Jeep Clubs, Inc. was first organized in April, 1959. Fourteen Charter Clubs formed the Association. Officers were elected and By-laws formed. Committees were appointed, with meetings being held once o month for the first year. The Club Emblem was designed and originated by Ed Calla-gan-, from the Desert Foxes Jeep Club. First Annual Meeting was held at the Tagus Ranch in Tulare, in February, 1960. Elections were held and the same officers elected for a second term, excepting the Secretary. At this time the meeting dates were changed to four meet-ings a year, the post office box at Sacramento was established, and two Vice-Presidents added to the Board of Directors, one from the North, and one from the South. In 1961, the first Rally was held at Pismo, and five more clubs added to the association. In 1962 all new officers were elected. By-Laws were changed and the California Association of Jeep Clubs, became the California Association of 4WD Clubs, Inc. By 1964 the Association had grown from fourteen clubs to thirty-two clubs. Dealers and Manufacturers were accepted as Associate Members. Plans were being made at this time to change the organiza-tion and have officers and meetings in three areas, Northern, Central and Southern. That is the way the Association operates at this time. Meanwhile the Associotion keeps on growing, and is now the Thirteenth Chapter of the California Wildlife Federation, and has a representative at all their meetings. Conservation has become the Association's main interest and has proven most successful. What started out, as a small group has now grown to Ninety-one Member Clubs within the Association. In 1968 the Annual Meeting was changed and is now known as the Annual Convention.
